Team name


The Rajasthan Royals are arguably one of the most controversial teams in the IPL, not only because they have been involved in several scandals but also due to acquiring a reputation as the “Moneyball” team because of their ability to unearth [previously obscure talent. They were the least expensive of all the original IPL franchises.

They are currently owned by a group of investors including Amisha Hathiramani, Majoj Badale, Lachlan Murdoch and Ryan Tkalcevic. Their former captain Shane Warne has a 3% ownership stake.

The value of the franchise is estimated at close to US $43 million.

The logo


Their logo features the team mascot, which is a lion called Moochu Singh, and he appears either side of the team name with RR spelt both forwards and backwards on a blue background within a circle. The team colours are primarily pink, with blue shoulders and sleeves. The team’s current anthem is “Phir Halla Bol” (Raise Your Voice Again”).

Home ground


The RR home ground is the Sawai Mansigh Stadium in Jaipur which has a current capacity of 30,000.

History


RR have had something of a chequered history in the IPL twice being expelled from the tournament. In 2010, they had the contract terminated, along with Kings XI Punjab, only to be reinstated after legal action.
Then in 2015 they were banned for two years following the Lodha Committee inquiry into the involvement of former owner Raj Kundra in an illegal betting scandal. He was subsequently banned for life.

RR have made the play-offs four times in their history, but their most successful year was back in 2008, the inaugural IPL season, when they beat CSK in the final to win the trophy for the one and only time in their history. They finished last of the eight teams in the 2020 edition of the tournament.
They also reached the final of the now defunct Champions Twenty20 in 2013.

Shane Warne


Leg simmer Warne is the second highest wicket taker of all time in test cricket. He joined the Royals in 2008 after his retirement from international cricket, and, although they were unfancied, he led them to victory in the very first IPL season. He continued to captain them until 2011.
He now opens 3% of the team via his undergarment brand called “Spinners”.

Rahul Dravid


The former Indian test captain is now Director of Cricket Operations at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He made more than 24,000 runs in his international career, and played for the Royals between 2011 and 2013, captaining them to the final of the Champions League Twenty 20 in 2013, before they were beaten by the Mumbai Indians..

Shane Watson


Shane Watson announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in November after a long and glittering career, which included becoming the first overseas player to score a century and take a hat-trick in the IPL. He joined RR in 2008 and went on to captain them. In 2013 won was named Man of the Tournament. He left the franchise following their ban, and went on to play for both RCB and CSK.

Steve Smith


One of the best current batsmen in the world and a former Australian captain until he was stripped of the armband and served a one-year ban for his role in the infamous “Sandpaper gate” ball tampering incident. He Is the current captain of the Royals having replaced Ajinkya Rahane.

Ben Stokes


All-rounder Stokes is the highest paid overseas player in the IPL and was Player of the Series in the 2017 version of the tournament. He was forced to miss most of the 2020 season due to the illness of his father, but returned in time to make 107 in Abu Dhabi against the eventual champions the Mumbai Indians
He was man of the Match for England in the 2019 World Cup Final.

Jofra Archer


The Barbadian-born English fast bowler is a World Cup winner like Stokes. In April 2020 he was named one of the Widen Cricketers of the Year and won the Player of the Tournament award for IPL 2020, the first time it has been given to a player from the franchise that finished last.
