Tennis in India

Tennis has been played in India for a long time, ever since the Englishmen brought the sport over back in the late 1800. The sport is mostly played by people in the suburbs but is watched and followed by people from all over India. The governing body for all tennis in India is called the All India Tennis Association, AITA. AITA is responsible for all domestic tennis tournaments and matches.

Even if India have lacked absolute top tennis players there’ve been a couple of names worth mentioning like Leander Paes and Sania Mirza. India have always been a stronger nation in doubles than singles. Throughout the years India have won many Grand Slam doubles trophies for both men and women. In Davis Cup, an international tournament with nations from all over the world, India is the most successful country from the Asian continent with their three times runners-up, 1966, 1974 and 1987.

India’s best tennis players

The majority of India’s most successful and prominent tennis players have been better at doubles than singles. By looking at the nation’s most memorable and impressive tournament performances, it’s obvious that India have been far more successful when playing doubles. Below you will be able to read about some of the best Indian tennis players to have ever been playing, and also some of the players that’re still active and worth keeping an eye on.

Leander Paes is seen as one of the best doubles players there have ever been. The Indian born tennis player was active for a long time but decided in 2020 to retire after an impressive career with several great wins and trophies. Just like India as a tennis nation, Leander Paes had his biggest strengths in the doubles. He managed to win over 50 titles when playing doubles and has been ranked as the number one on the world ranking back in 1999. He has won everything that a tennis player could dream about. The Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, both doubles and mixed doubles, are on Leander Paes list of tournament wins. There’s no doubt that he is India’s best tennis player in the history and one of the best that the game has ever seen. Leander Paes has taken tennis to a new level in India and led the way for new upcoming talents which we’ll hopefully be able to see soon in future tournaments.

Sania Mirza is India’s most ever successful female tennis player. She was born in Mumbai and is today one of the top profiled athletes in India. Her name is well-known throughout the tennis world and she’s reached great success during her career. She played singles and doubles until 2013 when she decided to focus only on doubles. Even if Sania Mirza has had some success in the singles she’s most recognized for her performances in the doubles where she has won most of the prestigious tournaments. In 2007 Sania Mirza managed to reach the 27th place at the singles world ranking, the highest position any Indian female tennis player have ever had. As of today, some of her most impressive tournament victories includes Grand Slam Doubles champion in the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Sumit Nagal – If Leander Paes is the best ever Indian male tennis player, then Sumit Nagal could be the next one to look out for. Nagal was born 1997 and so he’s a long career ahead of him, a career that has already given him appearances in all four Grand Slam tournaments. His highest ever ranking is 122 but as a young talented tennis player it’s just a matter of time until he manages to improve that record. Sumit Nagal is one of only six Indian players to have ever won a junior Grand Slam title.
