Basketball in India

Though it might never become as popular as cricket, basketball will without doubt have a future on the Indian sports scene. The lack of a proper top professional league is a problem that will have to be fixed, but steps are taken all the time to become a more prominent basketball nation. With a huge population and a general interest for sports, India has the potential of growing a strong basketball community and raise future superstars.

Since 2017 a cooperation between the NBA and the Basketball Federation of India has given place for the first ever NBA academy in India. The academy works as a place where talented basketball players can combine their sport development with studies. Every year some of the best and most promising talents are granted a spot at the academy, which also gives the NBA teams a chance to find the upcoming stars at an early stage.

India has both a men’s national team and a women’s national team, though neither of them have ever been participating in the World Cup. The Indian national teams have been attending the FIBA Asia Cup, but without any trophies won. The India men’s national basketball team has found most success in the South Asian Games, a competition they have won four times, 1987, 1991, 1995 and 2019. The South Asian Games is a multi-sport tournament held every other year and the nations that are participating in the games are India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Famous Indian Basketball Players

There are not many Indian basketball players that have got themselves a name abroad, but still there are a couple of players worth mentioning. Sim Bhullar is the most recognized player because of his record of being the first player of Indian descent to play in a NBA match. Apart from Bhullar there are some other players who have managed to make an appearance in the NBA Summer League or the G-League, which is the official minor basketball league in the US.

Sim Bhullar

Sim Bhullar is born in Canada but with Indian ancestries. In 2015 he became the first ever player with Indian heritage to play in the NBA when he made an appearance for the Sacramento Kings. Later on, he also managed to score the first points an Indian player has ever done in the NBA. Sim Bhullar’s NBA spell was short and after the 10-day contract with the Sacramento Kings ran out he left the NBA to join teams in the lower divisions. Bhullar’s parents are born in India but as a born and bred Canadian he’s chosen to represent the Canadian men’s national team.

Satnam Singh

Satnam Singh wrote Indian basketball history when he became the first ever Indian player to be drafted in the NBA draft. It was Dallas Mavericks who drafted the 2.18-meter-tall centre back in 2015. He never made an NBA appearance and was later sent to the Mavericks affiliate team in the G-League, the Texas Legends.
