Road to the final

The 2020 season of the women’s Big Bash League started in the end of October and will finish on Saturday with the grand finale between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder. This means that Brisbane Heat’s streak of two consecutive finals comes to an end as they lost against Sydney Thunder in the knock-out stage leading up to the final.

Melbourne Stars

Melbourne Stars have been the most impressive team this season. Not only have they reach their first ever Big Bash League final, but they also managed to finish on top of the table after the regular season. Eight wins out 14 games is a great record for a team that perhaps not everyone thought would stand in the final when the league kicked off in late October. Melbourne Stars captain is Meg Lanning and the team is coached by Trent Woodhill. A player to look out for a little bit extra in Melbourne Stars is Alana King. King has 15 wickets from 11 matches and has become a game-changer for her team as they’ve outperformed all other teams this season.

Sydney Thunder

If Melbourne Stars are playing the role as the unexperienced in this season’s final, then Sydney Thunders are the opposite. The Thunder have been advancing from the regular season all but two times and this will be their third final appearance ever, having won the title once back in 2016. They finished the regular season on 3rdplace with 16 points, 3 points behind Melbourne Stars. In the semi-final they managed to defeat the current champions Brisbane Heat in one of the season’s best games. Brisbane Heat went into the semi-final trying to reach their third consecutive BBL final. Telling by the odds and the expert’s predictions ahead of the semi-final, the Thunder weren’t given good chances of reaching the final. They proved them wrong and now they can bring home the club’s second championship trophy which will put them level with both Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers as the most successful BBL team.

Prediction and headsup

Even though they’ve never been in a Big Bash League final before the Melbourne Stars are favourites to win the 2020 season finale. They’ve impressed throughout the whole season and are going into the final with a good feeling. Looking at various bookmaker’s odds you can tell that the Stars are favourites to win. With that said, if there’s one team you should never underestimate it’s Sydney Thunder. They showed in the semi-finals what they’re capable of when they won against the current champions Brisbane Heat.
