Indian Premier League - Venues, favourites and TV-guide

This is Indian Premier League 2020

It’s a strange season of the Indian Premier League we’re experiencing with the current Covid situation. Instead of playing the matches at home soil all fixtures this season are taking place in the United Arab Emirates. The season is running from 19th September to 10th November and even if there will be no spectators watching the games it’s a season full of action and world class cricket.

Indian Premier League 2020 – Venues

Dubai International Cricket Stadium – Capacity 25 000

The Dubai International Cricket Stadium opened up in 2009 and has since then been used for several major cricket events. It is one of three stadiums in the United Arab Emirates used for cricket. The capacity of 25 000 spectators can be expanded to 30 000 but as the situation with Covid remains unstable no audience will be allowed this season in the Indian Premier League.

Sharjah Cricket Stadium – Capacity 16 000

Sharjah Cricket Stadium is a stadium with a long history and is the oldest of the three in use for the Indian Premier League. The stadium was built 1982 but has been improved and modernized several times since then. With a capacity around 16 000 it is the smallest stadium being used this season. Up until 2018 Sharjah Cricket Stadium held the record of hosting the most One Day Internationals.

Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium – Capacity 20 000

Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium is located in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. The stadium holds a capacity of 20 000 people and is described as an architectural masterpiece. Unique for this stadium compared to the other two being used this season is that Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium has been host to one football game. 2019 a friendly game between Thailand and Oman was played at this stadium where Oman won 2-0.

Who are the favourites to win the title?

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians are doing their 13th season in the Indian Premier League. They are the defending champions and will be aiming to win the club’s 5th league title. The captain of Mumbai Indians is Rohit Sharma and the team is being coached by Mahela Jayawardene.

As reigning champions Mumbai Indians are the favourites to win the Indian Premier League 2020.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals was founded in 2008 but has never won the Indian Premier League. They are the only team of the eight competing who has never appeared in a final. This season though will be a season where Delhi Capitals, led by coach Ricky Ponting, look to break that bad spell. The team is strong and with a good start to the season they should be given a good chance to reach the final.

RC Bangalore

RC Bangalore is another team who’s being seen as one of the favourites to win the title. The team is based in Bangalore, a city in south India. Being founded in 2008 RC Bangalore is still waiting for their first Indian Premier League title. Years of failures in their attempts to bring home the title have led to a less flattering nickname, Underachievers.
