Kolkata Knight Riders

Previous season: 5th
Coach: Brendon McCallum
Captain: Eoin Morgan
Indian Premier League Trophies: 2 (2012, 2014)

Kolkata Knight Rider was up for a stormy ride last season as they searched for any form of consistency. The switch of captaincy in the middle of the season is summarizing their season well and is something that they should not try to repeat in the 2021 season. The squad is good and strong compared to many of their opponents, the problem has been to show it on the field. They have managed to keep most of their key players from last season and by adding some promising names to the squad Kolkata Knight Riders should be able to contend for the top 4.

Can the change of name also bring the team a change of fortune? Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, will hope to improve on last season’s 6th place in the table and possibly reach the first Playoffs in the club’s history. Big ambitions and hopes have been boosted by some impressive signings. Dawid Malan, Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith are all signings that will make Punjab Kings a side to fear. If they manage to get the best of the squad and not picking up too many injuries Punjab Kings will be team fighting for the Playoffs.

Chennai Super Kings was one of the big letdowns last season as they failed to reach the Playoffs for the first time ever in the club’s IPL history. The squad is good enough to make it top 4 and the belief in the players is obvious as their prime goal during the offseason has been to retain as many of the key players as possible. They have added some strength to the team by purchasing Moeen Ali, Krishnappa Gowtham along with Cheteshwar Pujara. Back on home ground as the IPL is returning to India, Chennai Super Kings will be a team to look out for. Last season’s performances were not good enough and with several key players in the squad they will hope to make a bigger impact during the 2021 season.

Rajasthan Royals

Previous season: 8th
Coach: Vacant
Captain: Sanju Samson
Indian Premier League Trophies: 1 (2008)

The bottom finish in the table last season was not good enough for the Rajasthan Royals who’s been running several changes during the off-season. Sanju Samson has been awarded with the captaincy which shows the big faith the franchise has in the 26-year-old. Further, RR has named the former cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara as their new Director of Cricket. Sangakkara will be overseeing the organization as a whole and hopefully bring some valuable experience into the team. Last but not least, Rajasthan Royals also brought in the record signing Chris Morris in a deal worth Rs 16.25 crores. Morris will be doing his eight IPL-season as he returns to the RR for a second time, having represented the franchise back in 2015. There’re no doubts that RR is a stronger team going into the 2021 season. With strong recruitments, both on and off the pitch, the team should be well prepared for the new season and also have a good chance of reaching top 4 in the table.
