When Does the Premier League 2024/25 Season Start?

The 2024/25 Premier League season is set to start on August 17, 2024, and will conclude on May 25, 2025. The fixtures for the new season will be announced on June 18, 2024.

Format of the English Premier League

The English Premier League began in 1992, replacing the previous English Football League as the top-flight competition, which had been in place from 1988 to 1992. Each season, 20 of England's best teams compete to be crowned champions of English football. The league runs for 10 months, starting around the second week of August and concluding in the second or third week of May.

At the end of the season, the three teams at the bottom of the league table are relegated to the EFL Championship. The team finishing first wins the Premier League title. The top four teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with a potential fifth spot available if Premier League teams perform well in the previous season's Champions League. Additionally, the 5th, 6th, and 7th placed teams qualify for the Europa League and the Conference League.

Promotion and Relegation

The top two teams from the EFL Championship earn direct promotion to the Premier League. Teams finishing from third to sixth in the Championship compete in play-offs, with the winner earning the third promotion spot to the Premier League.

Premier League 2023/24: A Season to Remember

The 2023/24 Premier League season was historic, with Manchester City winning the title for a record fourth consecutive time. Arsenal finished second with 89 points, just two points behind Manchester City. Liverpool secured third place, while Aston Villa surprised everyone by clinching the final Champions League spot in fourth place.

Tottenham Hotspur finished fifth, earning a Europa League spot. Chelsea, in sixth place, will also compete in European football, either in the Europa League or the Conference League, depending on the FA Cup final outcome between Manchester United and Manchester City. If United wins, they will play in the Europa League, and Chelsea will be in the Conference League. If City wins, Chelsea will join the Europa League, and Newcastle will play in the Conference League.

Luton Town, Sheffield United, and Burnley were relegated this season, while Leicester City and Ipswich Town earned promotion to the Premier League. Leeds United, Southampton, West Brom, and Norwich will compete in play-offs to determine the third team promoted next season.
