Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2020/21

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a well-known Twenty20 cricket tournament in India held every year. It’s organized and governed by Board of Control for Cricket in India and was first played in 2009/10.  The tournament has got its name after the famous Indian cricket player Syed Mushtaq Ali who’s active between the 30’s and 50’s.

The format of the competition as of this season includes all domestic teams which counts 38 teams in total. The teams are divided into six different groups, A-E and the Plate Group. All groups consist of six teams except the Plate Group which has eight teams.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be running from the 10th of January until the 31st of January when the final is scheduled to be played at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Teams and groups

In a time when the majority of the top players are either on holidays or on duty with the Indian national team on their Australian tour, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will still be able to line up an impressive setup of players. Group A to E are the so-called elite groups and then there’s the Plate Group consisting of eight teams. Every team will play five games during the group stage before the top team from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The two remaining quarterfinal spots will be handed out to the two teams from the five elite groups with the highest number of points.

The current Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy champions are Karnataka who managed to defeat Tamil Nadu in last year’s final by one run. Karnataka, Gujarat and Baroda are the three most successful teams with three championship trophies each.

Group A - Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab, Railways, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh

Group B - Assam, Bengal, Hyderabad, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tamil Nadu

Group C - Baroda, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand

Group D - Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Vidarbha

Group E - Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Mumbai, Puducherry

Plate Group - Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim
