This is the Big Bash League 2020/21

The Big Bash League 2020/21 season will be the tenth edition of the Australian Twenty20 cricket league. It has gone almost ten months since the Sydney Sixers lifted the trophy and were crowned champions of the 2019/20 season. The Melbourne Stars fell short in the final and lost by 19 runs. Last season’s title was the Sixers second ever and they’re now only one behind the Perth Scorchers on three.

The 2020/21 will begin on the 10th of December and is planned to end in the beginning of February. Just like previous seasons there will be eight teams competing in the league where the five best teams after the regular season is played will advance to the Playoff stage.

Teams (BBL Titles): Adelaide Strikers (1), Brisbane Heat (1), Hobart Hurricanes (0), Melbourne Renegades (1), Melbourne Stars (0), Perth Scorchers (3), Sydney Sixers (2), Sydney Thunders (1)

There will be a total of 61 games during the season, including the five Playoff games. Some new changes have been made for the 2020/21 season in an effort to increase the number of viewers. Each team will additionally be allowed to register up to three overseas players. The new playing conditions for the 2020/21 season are:

Power Surge – The batting team will at any stage of the second half of an inning be able to call for a Power Surge. This means that only two players will be allowed outside the inner ring.

The X-Factor – The teams will be allowed to use one X-Factor player who can enter the game after the 10thover is played to replace a batsman or bowler who’s bowled no more than one over.

Bash Boost – A bonus point is awarded to the team with the best 10 over score halfway through the second innings.

Predictions

The 2020/21 season of the Big Bash League will be no different from previous editions. Expect a close and tight season where it’s hard to predict a winner. The teams have prepared well, even though the circumstances have been different from what they’re used to. By looking at some of the bookmaker’s winners’ odds you can tell that it’s going to be a tight race between Melbourne Stars, Sydney Sixers, Adelaide Strikers and the three-time champions, Perth Scorchers. What we can tell is that it’s not only about performing during the regular season, but you also need to save the best performances for the Playoff stage. Only once have a team finished top of the table and later on lifted the trophy, the Scorchers back in 2016/17. This shows how important it is for the teams to save their energy and top performances for when it really matters.
