Wimbledon Tennis

Wimbledon is the most well-known tennis tournament there is. Whether you’re a passionate tennis fan or not, you have probably at some time watched a Wimbledon tournament live via TV or live streaming. The tournament is more than 140 years old, making it the oldest tennis tournament that is still played. The history and its traditions are what make Wimbledon so special. The tournament is held every year, between June and July, in the district of London called Wimbledon. The event is the most reputable tournament of the tennis season and is also one of four Grand Slam tournaments every year with the others being the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.
The district of Wimbledon is where the tournament is held every year. The tennis complex in Wimbledon offers a large number of tennis courts where the tournament is being spread out. The main court, called the Center Court, is a historical and well-known tennis court around the world. This is where the finals are being played and it has seen a number of unforgettable battles throughout the years with players like Roger Federer, the Williams sisters, Rod Laver, Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg and Martina Navratilova. The Center Court was built back in 1922 and has always been the main court of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. In 2009 the Center Court was renovated as the capacity of the stadium was increased to 15 000. The stadium was also upgraded with a retractable roof to cover from heavy rainfalls during the games.
Wimbledon is a tournament filled with traditions. With more than 140 years to its name there’re still today traditions that have been kept in place since the beginning of the tournament. All participating players have to adapt to an all-white dress code, and the same goes for the ball boys and ball girls who are dressed in a certain traditional dress code.
The tournament is normally held at the end of June and runs for two weeks. Wimbledon is the third Grand Slam tournament of the year and is also seen as the most prestigious one. The tournament includes both men’s and women's singles, men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles as well as some junior and invitation events. Previous Champions – Men’s Singles

Indian players at Wimbledon

The fact that there's fierce competition at Wimbledon is no doubt when looking at previous champions. Names like Federer, Djokovic and Serena Williams show what level it takes to dig deep and go all the way to become a Wimbledon champion. Indian players have found it tough to bring any success in the tournament, though there are some exceptions. Leander Paes is one of the true tennis legends in India. During his career he’s won more international tournaments than any other Indian player has managed to do. Leander Paes, at his prime, was an excellent doubles player who managed to win all four Grand Slam tournaments. He became Wimbledon champion in 1999 when he, together with Mahesh Bhupathi, defeated Paul Haarhuis and Jared Palmer in the final. Paes has also won the mixed doubles at Wimbledon four times – 1999,2003, 2010 and 2015. Even though Paes’ career is soon coming to its end he will always be regarded as one of the greatest Indian sportsmen in history. Sania Mirza is one of the most successful Indian female tennis players. During her single career she managed to win over players like Martina Hingis, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Victoria Azarenka. In 2013 Mirza decided to retire from singles play and focus on doubles where she has been hugely successful throughout the years. Just like Paes, Sania Mirza has won the Wimbledon doubles once, 2015. In the final she played alongside Martina Hingis as they defeated Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. As a singles player Mirza only managed to reach the second round of Wimbledon, though she has always been a stronger doubles player than singles.
